2026 Legislative Session Begins Monday

The 2026 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature officially convenes Monday, marking the start of what is expected to be a busy and consequential session for the engineering industry. Over the past several weeks, ACEC Louisiana’s staff and Legislative Committee have been actively reviewing and tracking legislation that could impact the business of engineering across the state.

One of ACEC Louisiana’s priority bills this session is HB 387 by Representative Foy Gadberry, which addresses the enforcement and clarification of Louisiana’s incidental engineering law. The bill provides the State Fire Marshal’s Office with explicit authority to enforce the incidental engineering statute and clarifies the scope of incidental engineering by specifying that architectural site work associated with a building is limited to five feet from the foundation of the designed structure. This legislation is intended to strengthen existing law, ensure clearer enforcement authority, and maintain the proper distinction between the professional practice of engineering and architecture.

In addition to HB 387, ACECL is monitoring a wide range of legislation related to transportation, procurement, water resources, licensing, risk management, and workforce development that may affect engineering firms and the broader infrastructure sector. A summary of these bills and ACECL’s recommended positions can be found in the 2026 ACECL Bill Track Summary. Members can review the full 2026 Bill Tracker by clicking the button below and downloading the document.

As always, ACECL encourages members to share insight on legislation affecting their firms or areas of practice as we continue to advocate for policies that support the business of engineering in Louisiana.
